California Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is located in northern California, not far from Shasta-Trinity National Forest. It was named Whiskeytown after donkeys, while hauling supplies, lost their footing and spilled a large load of precious whiskey into a ravine. The NRA features many waterfalls, and is a great place to see wildlife including bears and mountain lions. Popular activities include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, camping, and horseback riding, which can be enjoyed year-round. On Whiskeytown Lake, a human-made reservoir, visitors enjoy swimming, kayaking, canoeing, scuba diving, fishing, water skiing, sailing, and boating (although personal watercraft are prohibited). In the summer, park rangers offer guided programs including kayak tours and gold-panning tours. Regional Properties
